This topic is for sharing all the different ways Runaway owners have built their bed frames and what mattresses they do and do not recommend.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that they purchased or are using a 6″ or 8″ mattresses. I read that “A 10 to 12-inch mattress is an excellent choice for adult sleepers. This height means the comfort layers should be at least 2 inches thick and have a 6‑inch support base. This thickness range provides your body with the right support. Beds thinner than 10 inches could lead to premature sagging and lose their support.” (SOURCE: https://bestmattress-brand.org/memory-foam-mattress-buying-guide/) THis is making me consider buying a 12″ mattress just to make sure I get something I’ll be happy with.  I was thinking of getting the Zinus 12 Inch Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress. What are your thought on  6″ vs 8″ vs 10″-12″ mattresses?

@filmphreaker We started with a 12 inch mattress but, in order for us to have the height we wanted for under bed storage, it was way too high and put us too close to the ceiling. If under bed storage is not an issue for you, it will work fine. We went with the Zinus 8″ trimmed to fit window-to-window and it is fine for camping. We don’t live in it so the minimal use the mattress gets, sagging is not an issue. That said, these mattresses are not expensive so replacing it when it does start to sag is not a problem. We have a 2019 RR and have traveled a good bit with it.

The first picture is with the 12″ mattress and the second picture is the 8″ mattress.

@jojo Thank you! These pictures are EXTREMELY helpful in seeing the difference. I thin i might go down tot he 8″ as well since I want o be able to comfortably sit upright on the bed.

So this weekend I finally got to work on my camper and build a bed. I went with an 8 inch also. Mainly because I wanted storage under north to fit my electric boat motor and other stuff, plus I didn’t want the bed going above the windows. 8 inch was perfect.

as for a base, there’s different ways to do it but I have slats with 2 inch spacing. That way the mattress doesn’t sag between them. In my opinion, 8 inch is fine but you’ll want to replace it sooner. I made a post about it but here’s the frame with uncovered mattress on it for test fits

Hi, I’m curious how tall you are. My RangeRunner will be here in December and I’m trying to get as much ready as I can now. I’m 6’3 and I know the internal width is only 70.5″. I am a side sleeper and often had my legs somewhat folded, it MIGHT work, but knowing I could never fully stretch out gives me anxiety. But I really want / need the under bed storage. A long or folding style bed takes that away.

I wish I replied sooner. Sorry about that, but I’m living out of the country and don’t get to check this as often.

I’m 5’9 but I sleep at an angle and I’m fine.

I needed the under-bed storage so I had to go with something like this. That said, when I’m back in the states this thing is pretty much my home while I travel between hotels from state to state. I’m not sure if I made a post with my newer storage additions but I have the Yakima exo system with two cargo boxes plus a rooftop storage box on the SUV. Many people think it’s overkill but I have 4 seasons worth of gear (snowboards, surfboards, skateboards and bikes) with me at all times and it’s perfect.
