I finally got access to a shop and built a bed. A bit surprised by lumber costs but below is a full supply list and costs. Feel free to copy or enhance this design for your own build but if you do, please share photos as I’d love to see it.

I used Pine because it’s cheaper and lighter. I was worried about strength but it’s holding 500 pounds just fine.

Here’s the end product:

52E32B7C EF14 4A76 B4BA BCC514B69F2F

Goals:

  • Create a bed that I actually want to sleep on
  • storage under the bed with limited hinderance from legs
  • still have room for Axel (Great Dane mix) to sleep on the floor
  • not obstruct windows
  • have a ledge to act as shelf
  • not add a lot of weight
  • easy install Seemed easy in my head, but I’m sure there are easier methods

Supplies:

Slats- 24 1x2s

Base/beams- 4  2x2s. I screwed two together to make the center beam stronger so instead you could use two 2x2s and one 2x4 for the center support. This can be improved on for a cleaner build

Legs- 6 legs that I had from another project (link) but you can buy some or make your own with 1 (additional) 2x2

Leg attachment hardware. The legs I had from another project came with hardware but there are different types. I found the four point plate to be easy.

The 2x2s are used as the base that the slats will sit on top of. The legs will also be attached to these.

From the rear door, they will be spaced kind of like this (I’ll get a better picture). Keep in mind this was a dry fit and not real placement. When I started screwing in the slats I used spare 2x2 pieces to act as spacers. I also used a spare 2x2 to clamp on the front to act as a guide for slat placement. Making them all even.

I felt to much give with just one support in the middle so I ended up doubling it and adding another. The second was screwed into the first middle 2x2, beefing it up to a 2x4

I only had four legs and decided to make to more for center beam. The legs aren’t actually visible but just use something strong.

I’ll sleep on it tonight in the driveway of shop and see how it does.

@thats-my-gigi

I bought a queen and trimmed it up so it would fit. An rv queen has slightly different dimensions but it works great!

@tiny-om How did you trim the mattress? I used an electric carving knife to cut mine, which worked well.

@lumpy-waters I did the same. I struggled to keep a striaght line though so if the cover is off it looks a bit.…jagged lol

In spring I’ll be changing it out for a japenese futton thing, that i love. It’s 100% wool also, so that’ll be nice.

I’ll list for sale for a steal and hopefully help someone out in the Texas area who doesn’t have the ability to cut one down.

I love it though. great fitment and almost just as comfortable as sleeping at home.
